Kennesaw Mountain High
School Weight Training Course Syllabus
Course Objective:
This
class is designed to promote muscular strength, muscular endurance,
cardiovascular endurance, speed, and agility.
The student will learn:
§ Basic weight training
techniques on the Bench Press, Squat, and Hang Clean
§ As well as supplemental
lifts for overall strength and conditioning benefits.
§ Cardiovascular endurance and
speed.
§ Through distance running,
speed training, sprinting, form running and plyometrics.
§ Proper flexibility training
techniques and principles.
§ Proper nutritional guides
and principles beneficial for strength training.
Cognitive
Knowledge:
The
students will have knowledge and understanding of major kinesthetic muscle
movements, secondary muscle movements; as well as foundational knowledge of
nutrition, flexibility, and other health and conditioning aspects involved with
strength training.
Department
Guidelines (Class Rules):
- There is no excuse for not dressing out. If you are at school you will dress out. Sick, injured, etc. are not a reason to
not dress out.
- The only place you are allowed to dress is in the PE locker
rooms! There is absolutely no dressing in the hallway bathrooms,
weight room or varsity locker rooms!!!
There are no exceptions!
- If you do not dress, ten (10)
points will be deducted from your weekly skills grade. If you do not participate for the day,
another ten (10) points will be
deducted. Each student earns 20 points a day resulting in a
possible weekly grade of 100.
Weekly grades help in determining the final average.
- Failure to dress out, not follow directions, unsafe behavior,
disrespect to instructor / other classmates, etc. can result in removal
from the strength training class.
- All students are expected
to stay with the class, not wandering the halls outside the weight room or
outside in the parking lot. Being on task in the
weight room is imperative to receiving beneficial weight training. BRING
WATER BOTTLE FOR CLASS!!!
- Students should have a spotter and use clips on the end of bars
during every single lift.
- Show respect to the instructor & follow ALL directions given
by instructor. SAFETY is Key!
- Jewelry and proper attire is
determined at the discretion of the instructor.
§ Proper
attire = T-shirts, shorts or sweat/wind pants, tennis shoes.
§ Flip Flops or ANY open toed shoes are
not appropriate!! Wearing these will
result in a grade of zero! SHOES ARE
REQUIRED!!

Your child has been instructed on every lift they are participating in,
required to have a spotter, and use clips at all times in the weight room. If
need be, please speak to your child about what is not an appropriate amount of
weight they should attempt to be lifting.
Facility Care:
We are
blessed with a wonderful facility. Take
PRIDE and OWNERSHIP in what we have been provided. It is YOUR SCHOOL, YOUR FACILITY; please help
us take care of it!
§ Anyone caught vandalizing any areas of the gym facility will be charged
for the restoration of said area(s). The
charges will range depending on the extent of the damage.
§ Acts of vandalism will also result in disciplinary measures.
§ Students are encouraged to report any vandalism to a teacher or
administrator.
Grading Procedure: (Students must dress out and participate
daily)
Weekly Skill
Grade: (Participation, dress out, effort,
etc) {20 pts. per day; 100 pts. per week} 60%
Fitness
Testing 30%
Final
Exam 10%
Total 100%
**The Weekly Skill grade will be negatively affected if you do not
partake in all aspects of the class. (Warm-up, walk/run, lifting, agility
exercises etc.) Any failure to follow
directions/expectations will result in losing points in the Weekly Skill Grade
category.
**Skill Test grade will include periodic Max testing on our 3 core
lifts (Squat, Bench Press, Clean)
**Failure to take the Final Exam will result in a grade of zero and
will remain that grade until the student makes up the exam or accepts the final
class average with the exam grade of zero averaged in.
Summary:
Weight training is a tremendous avenue to good health;
however, if not pursued in a safe and positive manner, it can lead to serious
injury and/or bodily harm. Students not
willing to follow adequate procedures, rules, and regulations present a
potential safety hazard and will be removed from the weight training class.
Personal Items and Valuables Procedure
Kennesaw Mountain High School personnel WILL NOT
be held responsible for any personal items misplaced, lost, or stolen before,
during, or after Physical Education classes.
It is the responsibility of the student to accept full responsibility
for the security of his/her personal items and/or valuables. Students are strongly encouraged to leave
large amounts of money, iPod, cell phones, jewelry or any other valuables at
home to prevent loss of valuables.
NO STUDENT VALUABLES will be taken and kept by
instructors. Students will assume
responsibility for securing their items and/or valuables by either of the
following methods:
a. Leave ALL valuables at home.
b. Lock valuables in your school
locker.
CELL PHONE
POLICIY
Students shall
not use, display or turn on cellular phones, video phones, or electronic
devices during instruction time except when a teacher uses these devices for
instructional purposes. The consequences for inappropriate cell phone use
are:
1st Offense – Teacher warning
2nd Offense – Parent Call for warning of future
referral for next offense
3rd Offense – Administrative referral
